I'm kind of breaking away from the normal use of this blog and decided to set up a recipe blog so anyone can see what exactly this crazy family eats every day. We are very consistent and dedicated to good health. We have a unique way of eating that has brought us health and happiness.

I feel kind of sheepish doing this but I think it will be helpful to alot of people.

The kids and I eat a little bit differently from Sasha. For now I'm going to just put what the kids and I eat because Sasha usually just eats oats, dates and nuts twice a day without much variation besides what I fix for snacks or lunch.

Breakfast:

Oats, Milk/soymilk, Homemade Granola(I don't think I have this recipe up but it's a very basic granola recipe with oats, agave, cinnamon, sunflower seeds, coconut and raisins.

Lunch:

Sloppy Joes (ground turkey, kidney beans) on Fresh Homemade Bread

sides: Buckwheat and organic baby carrots

Dinner: Freedom Fries (pan fried potatoes...this recipe is on Healthy Recipes) with organic ketchup (can't remember the brand right now but it is from our local Health Food Store) I have made my own ketchup and have a recipe posted for it but it doesn't taste the same as store bought and I really do prefer that taste.

sides: sliced apples (Frugal note: I bought a box of these apples at a store called NPS in Salt Lake City that sells about to go past their date food for cheap. I got 40 pounds of apples for $10)

In the summer I will go and pick fruit from my neighbors trees that they aren't eating and serve this to my kids with meals or for snacks.  We have a garden and eat out of there in the summer too. This year the garden may not be as fruitful because of crazy weather. I don't plant a huge garden but I do a little bit of gardening.

Thanks for posting. I'd love to see your ideas and actual costs for "frugal healthy cooking" as well. It seems that unhealthy foods often cost LESS than healthy foods, and perhaps you can dispel that myth. I'm always looking for ways eat healthier and lower the grocery bill at the same time.

From Lucia on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 12:29:16

Great idea, I'm always curious as to what other runners eat daily!

From Yushen on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 12:30:10

I'd love to see a blog on your (family) food!

Maybe you will add some variation to my receipts - I tend to prepare my breakfast and lunch before I leave for my office everyday, thus I can avoid eat food with unknown/dubious ingredients.

From JeffC on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 12:51:27

I am really looking forward to this to help me in my own diet. I have never made Granola, we usually buy it, but would love to have your recipie if you can come up with it....I don't even know what "agave" is?? I am new to this type of eating but am looking forward to giving it a try.

From luzylew on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 12:53:54

This is awesome!! Sarah, I love to see what people are eating. Your interest in good food is infectious, and your pregnancy cravings are funny. So, yes, it will help any of us interested in eating/cooking/running. I, for one, would love it if you were not shy about why you choose what you're eating (what the foods contain or do, and why they are important on the day you are eating them, etc). Not every day is an important food day, but I'd love it if you'd share that info on the days you have a reason for eating/preparing certain things. I'm looking forward to reading your menu. Thank you!

From josse on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 13:00:11

I think this ia a great idea! Paul it is true that some "heathy" food is more expensive but my grocery bill has gone down not buying "junk" food. I but alot of what I eat in bulk and is a fraction of the price.

From josse on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 13:02:29

Similar to what I eat this morning. Mine was my 7-grain ceral mixed in natually sweeted yogut with walnuts and figs. I let the ceral sit for alittle bit to get soft.

From shanmarie on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 13:07:28

I'm with the person who doesn't know what agave is!! But I am really looking forward to some tips on how to eat better.

From sarah on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 13:27:33

I'm very happy for the responses and hope I can help motivate you guys to eat better and not be afraid of weird things like ...agave for instance.

Agave is cactus juice actually and it is a sweet syrup similar in taste to corn syrup. Please feel free to share things you eat and any questions I'll try and answer.

As far as healthy food being more expensive...it is in some ways. When we buy a case of young coconuts that is definitely an expensive treat for us.

However like Josse said buying in bulk can save money. There are many ways to find bulk prices on grains that can last a long time, give you peace of mind for the future, help you eat better and save money. We order bulk food through our health food store and get a 10% discount. Costco sells bulk food. The LDS church sells bulk items at price to anyone through the cannery. Contact a member of the church in your area for more info on that.

From Michelle on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 14:28:53

Sarah, where can I get honey in bulk at a resonable price?

From luzylew on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 14:29:08

Also can you please post in the blue box (there on the left of this blog) a link to the place where you keep all your recipes? I know it's somewhere in the large context of the fastrunningblog.com, and I've found it twice before, but I always have to remember how I found it. It would be nice to put that here for easy reference if you can(maybe listed as a 'favorite blog'). I'd love that!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 15:04:28

Luz - the recipes are at the Healthy Recipes link at the very top on every blog, not just Sarah's.

From MarcieJ on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 15:23:31

I am excited for you to post what your family eats. I just ordered and recieved bulk oats/brown rice and lots of other stuff from azure. So it will help on how I can use them.

From wheakory on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 17:02:35

I've found that turkey meat exactly has the same amount of fat as beef. I never realized that until my wife pointed that out to me. But Turkey is better for you.

From Lybi on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 17:24:07

How cool! This is a great idea, Sarah!

From Jody on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 18:45:56

Thanks for sharing with us! I can definitely benefit from your ideas.

From Benn on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 19:05:12

Hey Kory, I don't know where you shop, but I know a few of the stores around me offer very low fat alternatives. I usually get 99% fat free ground turkey which I think has 3 or 4 grams of fat.

From wheakory on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 19:09:19

Benn - You can also get Lean Beef the same way and it only has 3 or 4 grams of fat.

From Shauna on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 19:11:05

Yum! We will have to try some of this stuff out-thanks for posting!!

From Benn on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 20:09:38

Oh okay I didn't know that Kory :). My parents never gave me beef as a kid, so I have never experienced the taste of a steak or anything :( but I did read somewhere that beef has more trans fat per ounce than ground turkey. Is that true?

From josse on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 20:29:03

Beef does not have trans fats in them, either does turky. Meat has saturated fat except fish has the omega. Fats form meat are not bad for you if cooked rught. A trans fat is fat that has been hydrogentated or when a fat is heated to a very high temp.

From Brent on Mon, Jun 02, 2008 at 22:51:29

From MichelleL on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 23:26:18

The good thing about extra lean ground beef you don't get in extra lean ground turkey is highly absorbable iron. I used to shun beef until I found I was highly anemic, but for the past decade I've eaten more super lean red meat and I've been fine since.

Sarah-thanks for starting this blog! We should have a granola making party sometime.

From sarah on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 23:36:40

Hmm...good point. I guess we don't eat red meat because of how we feel after we eat it. Both Sasha and I have a harder time digesting it. I'm not one to say no to a hamburger once or twice a year but Sasha doesn't like it at all.

I would love to have a granola party. I think it would be fun to see what kind of things people want in theirs. I'm happy with the basic one because it's easier and cheaper but my kids would probably be open to a new flavor.

From Breanna on Sat, Jun 07, 2008 at 20:33:52

My family prefers bison meat. It is as lean as chicken and fish and it doesn't taste to different from regular beef. You can get it at Whole Foods/Wild Oats. Its a little bit more expensive than regular beef, but not by much. My dad normally just buys roasts and cuts them into steaks. They have hamburger too.

Breakfast: Oats w/ soymilk or milk (the girls and I do milk, the boys are lactose intolerant and drink soymilk) topped with homemade granola.

Lunch:

Whole wheat angel hair pasta (I buy Heartland brand from Wal-mart...much cheaper than the health food store brand and satisfactory quality) Homemade spaghetti sauce with sauteed mushrooms. The kids and I top this with Parmesean cheese

sides: homemade bread with butter/honey/jam/garlic (sasha likes his with honey and garlic...yuck) organic baby carrots

Dinner: Homemade Pizza (it must be Italian day) Sasha likes his without cheese. I put plenty of cheese on top for me and the kids. Sometimes I buy chicken sausage from Costco for a yummy pizza topping.

sides: cucumber, carrots and watermelon

Even though we eat the same breakfast day after day I guess I just want people to see that that's really what we do. I vary our breakfast sometimes but if I make granola we definitely enjoy eating that. That is one way to keep things cheaper. Keeping your recipes simpler gives me more time to have a little bit of a life outside the kitchen and things are a bit cheaper that way. I do, however, try to provide variety for the health benefits I think it brings.

Sarah, when you say "oats" - what kind of oats are they? Plain rolled oats cooked, plain rolled oats uncooked, pre-processed oats (quick cooking)? If you cook them, is it just with water/salt and then you add milk when you serve them, or do you cook with milk/soymilk?

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 11:44:21

Maria - it is rolled oats uncooked.

From sarah on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 12:30:44

When I cook them I boil water add a little salt, agave and cinnamon. Then we eat our oatmeal with milk or soymilk and fresh or frozen berries (if we have them...I don't go back to the store before it is time) I try to limit my trips to the store in order to control our budget.

From wheakory on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 14:15:49

What type of sauce do you use for make? What type of flour also do you use for your homemade pizza?

From sarah on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 14:29:26

I think I have a spaghetti sauce recipe on the Healthy Recipes link at the top and that's what I use in all my italian dishes.

Basically I use salt free tomato sauce from Walmart...cheapest I've founnd. Then I add whatever spice I feel like that day..I have an Italian blend of spices I use sometimes, onion, garlic, parsley....etc.

The dough of the pizza is a bread recipe that I make in my bosch. I use only whole wheat flour in all my baking.

We have a wheat grinder so I grind my flour fresh. For cookies, cakes, pizza, cinnamon rolls, etc I grind up Hard White Wheat because it has a lighter color and flavor.

For bread I've started using Hard red wheat because it has a heartier flavor and texture.

If you were going to buy whole wheat to make pizza crust with I would buy pastry whole wheat because it has a finer texture (doesn't mean only for pies though) As far as the actual bread recipe my crust comes out deep dish style and I've haven't experimented to make it a thinner crust. I've got the pizza crust recipe on their too and that one can be made by hand...the crust just comes out a little bit crumbly when mixed by hand.

From wheakory on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 17:05:09

Thank you Sarah that's helpful. I'm going to start to cook a lot of our dinners so this is a great blog. I want us to continue to eat healthy.

From sarah on Wed, Jun 04, 2008 at 19:41:25

I'm so glad it's helpful. It's actually a stress relief for me to type and have a minute to breathe and think about what I'm doing. It also encourages me to make something nice. When I menu plan I plan in a few easy nights. Don't try and do everything at once. Good luck!:)

Breakfast: Rolled raw oats with soymilk/milk and homemade granola.

sides: Cantelope

Lunch: Revisted Homemade Cheese Pizza

sides: grapes/baby carrots

We almost always just drink water with our meals. I'll let my kids have milk if they ask for it but I'm into simple. Sometimes I make homemade rootbeer with rootbeer flavor and agave to sweeten. I love rootbeer....I also make it into popsicles for later. I also often buy fresh limes and squeeze some into some water with a bit of agave. Mostly I push water because it's free.

Dinner: Steamed Salmon w/ Red potatoes ( I'll add dill and olive oil to the steamed potatoes and some dill and braggs liquid aminos-similar to soy sauce- to the salmon)

sides: cucumbers/watermelon

Dessert: Fresh homemade cinnamon rolls (I've been using my Bosch alot this week. I make these rolls with my same basic bread recipe only add butter and fructose and cinammon)

Your smart by drinking the water to keep hydrated, and is good to keep the body flushed. One of my weakness is diet vault zero soda. I love this drink and drink it every day which I know is not the best thing for me, but also drink water too. This is a bad habit for me and will be hard to break.

I had to run out of my house this morning because my wife bought the Jumbo Cinnamom rolls for the daycare kids. When she does this I have to get out of the house fast so that I don't have one.

There's too much fat in the bakery ones and frozen store ones. I will have to try your recipe. I don't eat a lot of sweets because the contents is just not good for you. Great meals by the way.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 05, 2008 at 16:17:45

Kory - note that those roles are Sasha-kosher. Whole wheat, olive oil, no eggs or milk, honey or agave for sweetener.

Do I get healthy points for 'just reading' your menus/recipes? I certainly feel healthier. I really do love to read what people eat, and you are one thrify shopper too. So thanks for your time and energy here. I've purused your recipes, but I don't see one for beet borsch, and I'm dissapointed. I love beets and cabbage when they are in season. I'd love to see a good recipe if you have one. I'd also like to know how those flax crackers worked out....:)

You're funny. "Be ye eaters of the good food, and not just readers only." I got it. I used to work for the Good Earth Health Food store and always used to joke that just working there made me healthy....but let's not kid around here. I'm still after the borsch and flax cracker recipes....

I thought I'd make note of the groceries I bought this week. This is partly for me to see what we buy and how often.

Costco:

2 pounds Salmon, 10 pounds red potatoes, 2 gallons milk, 1 bag tortilla chips, 1 bag rice chips(for the barbeque), 1 pound blackberries, 1 pound blueberries, 2 cases soymilk, 2 loaves whole wheat bread, 1 box of organic raisin bran, 1 carton natural omega eggs, 1 case pull-ups.

Reams: 1 watermelon, 1 cantelope, 1 honedew melon, 2 cucumbers, 4 small cartons cottage cheese.

Good Earth: 5 pounds fructose

Breakfast: Raw rolled oats and granola with soymilk/milk

sides: honeydew melon

Lunch: Creamy Split Pea Soup ( I put the typical carrots, onions, celery jazz in and then blend it in the blender to make a very delightful soup on a cold June day)

Sides: baby carrots/ salsa fresca rice chips

Dinner: Creamy Pea Soup...five hours old....

sides: rice chips/grapes

A couple of my kids only got one of the cinnamon rolls I made yesterday so I woke up and made a fresh batch this morning....the magic of a Bosch...awww... They still ate the soup after stuffing their little faces on sweet rolls. Joseph who rarely eats thirds asked for thirds of soup. He loves green and I guess that's why he wanted more green soup. :)

Sarah,

This is AWESOME!

We are also (mainly) simple, natural eaters with a few exceptions (my kids take some packaged snacks to school and I suspect that my hubby doesn't confess everything that passes through his lips in the office)

Do you also homeschool?

I roll my eyes when I hear a mother complain of a picky eater. Kids will eat what you give them (if they are hungry enough!)There are so many good reasons to eat simply.

Homemade cinnamon rolls make me a very popular in this house!

Thank you for taking the time to share this! I love it!

Breakfast: Granola , granola, granola...we are almost out of it and I actually am getting tired and had a bowl of raisin bran this morning. I think I'll try cooking oatmeal next week if I can get organized. The kids wake up right when I'm done running and want to eat right away.

Lunch: Mashed Potatoes

I boil red potatoes whole. I leave the skins on partly because I'm lazy and partly because I like them. I leave a bit of potato water in them for mashing and add olive oil and salt to taste. Sometimes I get fancy and sprinkle some parsley on top. The kids eat it with organic ketchup and Sasha sprinkles flaxseed crackers on top.

sides: green salad

I put a spoonful of veganaise and a dash of garlic powder on the salad and my kids gobble the salad up. Don't tell them about the garlic.

Dinner: Turkey Sandwiches

sides: grapes, rice chips, cookies (from good earth they were on a sale for an amazing price....I should go back and get a case!)

We are going to eat it picnic style at the Stake Bar B-Q.They don't usually serve super healthy food at these functions and we try to just bring our own "cool" stuff so the kids don't feel bad. I like hamburgers but am happy not to eat them most of the time.

Nothing wrong with being consistent every day.

From Maria on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 17:21:21

Regarding flaxseed crackers: I don't know how labor intensive they are, but most likely too much for me :). I used to eat a lot of flax seeds after my GI surgery, because they are excellent for digestion and regulating the bowel, not to mention nutrional value. What I did, though, is simply grind the seeds in a coffee grinder and add tablespoons to oatmeal, salads, etc. You can do the same with mashed potatoes - in case you run out of crackers or don't feel like making them.

From adamr on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 18:16:12

Leaving the skins on is THE only way to make mashed potatoes right! That's how we go at our house. Hayley even used to say when she was little that "potato" was her favorite food. Actually, she still says that... :)

From sarah on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 19:15:51

It sure makes it a lot easier..glad to hear someone vote for it. Sasha's mom hated it that I left the peels on....Sasha,however, has gotten used to it.

Maria: The crackers were a bit of work but not too bad. I'll make them when Sasha begs me but he's not very demanding about food since he realizes that I'm pretty tuckered out from child care most of the time. :)

From Jodi on Fri, Jun 06, 2008 at 19:32:56

I make up my own "oatmeal packets" on Sunday for the whole week. I add brown sugar, cinnamon, protein powder and flaxseed to mine. So I just measure 1 serving out put it in baggies, twist tie. Then in the morning it only takes 2 1/2 mins in the microwave. Just a suggestion.

From sarah on Sat, Jun 07, 2008 at 10:22:33

That's probably one reason why we should get a microwave again. I got rid of it when I was in a more ultra health phase but I sure miss it sometimes.

From Lybi on Sat, Jun 07, 2008 at 10:51:53

What great ideas about flaxseed! I've always known they were super healthy, but I've never tried to actually eat them because I could figure out a way to do it.

Can you grind flaxseed in a normal wheat grinder? Grinding would make it easy to slip into just about anything

From sarah on Sat, Jun 07, 2008 at 19:04:49

You can put flaxseed in just about anything..it's true..granola, muffins, etc...I bought a little coffee grinder from Walmart for about $12 and that's how I've ground flaxseeds in the past. The crackers I made have whole flaxseeds in them. They are good for digestion but I don't give them to my little boys.

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ blackberries and blueberries on top.

Lunch: We are getting free sack lunches at a BYU play my kids got tickets too at the library. I'll take out the cookies and give them the sandwiches, fruit and water...I'll probably bring some more of those cookies I got from Good Earth.

Dinner: TBA

Breakfast: Waffles w/ pure maple syrup

Lunch:  Tortilla chips and salsa

Carob Banana Ice Cream (frozen bananas, carob powder and soymilk in my champ blender...came out thick like ice cream)

This meal was kind of a snack

Dinner: Whole wheat angel hair pasta w/ sauce

sides: sliced cucumbers

Dessert: Carob Chip Cookies

Breakfast: Oats w/ milk

Jenny puts peanut butter in hers sometimes

Lunch: Shrimp Jambayala

sides: cucumbers and apples

We always use brown rice in all of our rice dishes. The kind I bought for my food storage is called Basmati and it smells like buttery popcorn when it cooks.

Dinner: Freedom Fries w/ Organic ketchup

Dessert: Carob Banana Ice Cream

Breakfast: The granola is gone. My 3 year old demanded that I produce more granola that instant...he is usually pretty good with his demands but I guess didn't quite understand this time. So, we had raw rolled oats with milk and agave. My kids adore this combination and I'm pretty happy with it too.

Lunch: Tuna Casserole (veganaise mayo, pickles, cucumbers, tomatoes and sunflower seeds)

sides; watermelon and a very few sugar snap peas from our garden :)

Dinner: Rhubarb Crisp

I didn't have any shopping to do this afternoon and felt ambitious so we picked the rhubarb in our backyard and made a delicious dessert...for dinner. I will feed my kids apple crisp or peach cobbler for dinner sometimes too.

Lucky ducks!

Breakfast: Oatmeal (agave, cinammon on top)

sides: homemade whole wheat bread w/ all fruit jam (I buy smuckers all fruit jam at Wal-mart for the best price I've found for sugar-free jam)

Ask me sometime to tell you about the failed jam experiments I've done. One batch in particular still sits on my shelf and bears the title "Texas Barbeque Jam"

Lunch: Baked Chicken ( I marinated the chicken legs last night w/ braggs, coriander and sage. I'll probably add some more braggs and then bake them for an hour. I've started always covering the chicken I bake so it's more tender and doesn't dry out)

sides:  barley ( I added this to the chicken to let it soak up all the juices..yum) cucumbers , watermelon, fresh garden peas (I leave these out of the salad because Sasha doesn't like them in)

Dinner : TBA

I always buy a sugar free jam that I use for lunch. I made my own lunch recipe that's weird that I eat quite frequently.

I mix a little bit of honey with the sugar free jam, then I add uncooked oatmeal. I put this in the microwave for 30 seconds, and of course mix it up afterwards. Then I spread this on a whole wheat bagel. I will also eat fat free yogurt with this too, and if I'm still hungry I'll eat an apple or orange.

Do you think this is a healthy enough lunch or enough lunch with the training I've been doing?

Also whats better for you honey or agave?

From sarah on Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 17:12:48

That sounds similar to what Sasha eats often...in ingredients that is. I think it sounds yummy.

I drink when I'm thirsty and eat until I'm not hungry anymore. If you aren't hungry after that sounds good to me. I would probably always add some fresh fruit or veggies to the meal but that's one thing I'm kind of particular about with my kids.

I'm not certain which is better for you as far as honey or agave goes. It's debatable. I'm perfectly fine with either. I think it's more personal preference. I think however agave may be better for someone looking for a low glycemic sweetner.

From wheakory on Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 17:23:43

The chicken recipe sounds good and must have a great flavor marinated the night before. I'm going to have to try that one. I love chicken in just about any recipe.

Tell Sasha he needs to eat those fresh garden peas.

Brk: Oatmeal

Lunch; Mexican Cornbread Casserole (adzuki beans, barley, salt free tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder with layer of cornbread on top)

sides: green salad w/ homemade ranch dressing

Dinner: Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

sides: strawberries, cucumbers

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries

sides: whole wheat toast w/ all fruit jam

Lunch: Sloppy Joes on homemade whole wheat buns

I am going to use the adzuki beans from yesterday and barley from the day before as a base for the sloppy joes, add some mustard, ketchup, worchestshire (sp?) sauce, garlic powder dehydrated onions...yum..should be good)  Sasha goes in and out of his admiration for beans. I personaly think they are wonderful all by themselves. He needs them dressed up a bit. We'll see if he likes lunch today or not....

sides: green salad w/ homemade ranch dressing

Dinner: TBA...I'm toying with the idea of making a breakfast casserole for dinner. We got this new kind of chicken sausage from Costco yesterday that tastes like the most delicious hot dog you've never had.....I mean I shouldn't really compare it with a hot dog. It's sausage..just has a light delicate and lovely taste.

yea...it's pretty nice...During soccer/dance season we have it way more than I'd like to admit...may have to stop blogging our dinners for awhile to save face. :)

From Jennifer Pachev on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 23:21:41

I know what I,m having for breakfast cereal HA..HA while everybody else will have oatmeal (I bought myself some cereal)/.

From Tom on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 15:53:10

Sarah it's been interesting to get a glimpse of your family's diet. Thanks for posting this.

Kim and I have both made changes over the past few months to eat better and I think we've seen positive results.

One question that I've wondered for a while.... I notice one of my all-time favorite food items has yet to show up on your menu...namely PEANUT BUTTER!!! I absolutely LOVE PB (usually with a bit of honey and maybe walnuts on wheat bread) and consider it an essential part of my diet and happy deameanor. So I'm just wondering...is there anything fundamentally bad about peanut butter? Please say it ain't so!

BTW as I'm typing I'm also reading the back of the bag of Hershey's All Natural Extra Dark Chocolate that Kim gave me for Father's Day and it tells me that my Extra Dark has just slightly less antioxidant capacity than 1 cup of Blueberries. So I think I'll have another piece...maybe dipped in peanut butter :-)

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 15:59:25

I eat several PB/honey/whole wheat break/garlic sandwiches a day.

From Tom on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 16:05:27

Ahhh glad to hear it Sasha. However I think you should replace the garlic with extra dark chocolate.

From sarah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 16:27:27

Dark chocolate...I'm trying to talk Sasha into that one still...yes and he really does eat pb and garlic sandwiches....yuck. I don't really like PB and J so I only make it if there is a real emergency. Lately my emergency food has been raisin bran and all of my kids love that. I'm so glad you enjoy my postings...like a lot of things in my life I can do a little bit. Sorry no fancy pictures or gormet ideas but I thought it would be fun to see how we really do eat...thanks again.

From josse on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 16:37:50

Could smell that garlic this morning:)

From Tom on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 16:50:24

Kim and I have both developed a fondness for raisin bran as a primary breakfast food of choice, we like to embellish it with nuts, granola, cranberries, etc.

Garlic on the other hand.....let me just say there have been a few unfortunate incidents in our house regarding garlic and it has NOT become a food staple.

I won't go into detail but I'll just say that a husband shouldn't make any negative comments to his wife regarding post-lunch garlic-breath at a time when his wife happens to be feeling a bit amorous....not wise unless you want the wife to not feel very amorous again for a good long while :-)

From sarah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 19:30:18

I was so excited when they came out when a healthier version of raisin bran I nearly cried. I LOVE raisin bran and can afford the $7 for two big bags that they sell at Costco...if we eat it occasionally.

Our oats breakfast is DIRT CHEAP because we buy 400 lbs at a time and store it in buckets in our basement as part of our year supply.

And on the subject of garlic..um..well let's just say that I must be a vampire...because sometimes it keeps me away...

Ted (army runner) who ran with Sasha every morning for 2 years straight before his knee problems probably has suffered garlic smells almost more than a good solider should bear.

From Jennifer Pachev on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 23:10:30

What is for lunch tomorrow Mommy maybe buckwheat with cheese yum..yum.

Breakfast: oats and strawberry yogurt

Lunch: Tuna Casserole (would have made Salmon today but Sasha wasn't in the mood for anything but tuna)

Dinner: French Toast (with homemade whole wheat bread) topped with fresh raspberries and agave syrup(we ran out of maple syrup..we'll have to wait until I go to Costco next week)

Dessert: Kids bought themselves all sorts of treats at Good Earth with their compensation packet for Heart of Holladay.

Everytime I ready that you use Agave Syrup it makes me what to ask you what do you think of sourgum (sourgam?) Or what other semi-refined sugars might you recommend. I love Good Earth treats. I vote for those sesame/honey crunch square thingys and Havalah. MMM.

From sarah on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 23:43:35

No opinion on sorgam...actually I've been happy with agave for my syrupy sugar replacement and with crystallized fructose for my crystal sugar replacement. I think you have to research it yourself and try it out on your body and see how you feel. Sasha would say "Go for a run and see how you feel".

From Daniel on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 00:58:45

I like sorghum. My grandma used to make some great sorghum cookies. I don't know if it is healthy or not, but it is grown sometimes in the midwest. It is a little thicker than honey and has a distinct taste to it. If you have ever seen the movie Hoosiers, then you have seen them processing it.

Breakfast: oats and yogurt

Lunch: Lentils (I just boiled them and added some olive oil and braggs...I love them that way..oh and a dash of dehydrated onions)

sides: baby carrots, homemade bread with jam, orange slices

Dinner: Homemade Pizza( put some of the chicken sausage from Costco on top...yum)

fresh strawberries, baby carrots

Dessert: my favorite!!! Strawberry Shortcake

I made a recipe of vanilla pound cake (cut down on the eggs and put in half olive oil half butter...Sasha still won't eat it because of the eggs) Made muffins and used those for the shortcake part. I whipped up about a year's supply of whipping cream in my Bosch. Used some of that on top of the shortcake with cut up strawberries..heaven. I'm putting the leftovers of the whipping cream in my freezer to use over the next few months or so for anything that could use some cream....I love cream.

Why won't Sasha eat it because of the eggs? Sure sounds yummy... send me some :-)

From sarah on Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 15:41:16

Sasha doesn't eat eggs or dairy. He feels funny when he runs after eating them.

I believe that they are natural foods intended for people to eat but understand that some people have body types that don't handle cholesterol as well as others.

Breakfast: Fruity Breakfast Cereal (bought at good earth can't remember the name and I'm too tired from my run to go all the way upstairs and look) Julia talked me into buying it when we were on a date yesterday.

Lunch: Leftover Homemade Pizza (at the park after my midwife appointment)

sides: baby carrots, juice boxes

Dinner: Steamed Salmon and red potatoes ( i steam them in my two story steamer...it's great and then add dried parsley, garlic, dill, olive oil and salt)

sides: garden peas

Breakfast: Oats and Yogurt w/ sliced strawberries

Mid morning snack (we had friends coming over and needed to do lunch later)-strawberries and cream, natural cheetos, yogurt triple berry smoothies.

Lunch: Mashed Potatoes and chicken sausage

baby carrots

Dinner: Leftover mashed potatoes (we had a lot leftover because Daddy wasn't around to eat most of them and I just so darn used to cooking for him)

and....whatever else the kids felt like...bread and jam, oats and milk.....smoothie popsicles I made this morning. Then we went to the park after dinner and brought along our huge bag of baby carrots from Costco and they had millions of them. I always used to bring fresh veggies to the park. My kids will munch on anything when they are happily playing..so I sneak in more veggies that way.

I didn't have much of an appetite tonight but was hungry...perfect recipe for a blood sugar crash and no husband around......so sorry for myself. ....I know that they are having a time and I wouldn't interfere for the world....enough chatter....night y'all

Breakfast: Oatmeal with triple berries (frozen from Costco..marionberries, blueberries and raspberries)

Lunch: Potstickers (also from costco) and Rice

sides: orange slices, watermelon and baby carrots

Dinner:  TBA

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ raspberries and blueberries

Lunch: Turkey wraps (I buy the natural deli version without nitrates) and whole wheat tortillas at Walmart. I love these tortillas because they are a good price 2.04 and they actually stay together. I've bought ones at the health food store that crumble as soon as you bite into them.

sides: cantelope/organic sesame street crackers ( also from Wal-mart...a treat to get the kids to behave for the grueling Wal-mart shopping trip)

Dinner: Green salad, avocado wraps, leftover pancakes, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  We kind of all did our own thing tonight. Sasha and the little boys had avocado wraps. I had leftover pancakes and salad. Benjamin had cereal and the girls ate pb and j.

Breakfast: Raisin Bran (some of the kids had oats still but I was in the mood for something else)

Lunch: Tacos w/ ground turkey and buckwheat. I always stretch the meat by mixing the turkey and buckwheat. I add my own spices to the meat and never use those packet thingys...they are bound to have sugar in them...just look and see for yourself.

sides: grapes, watermelon, plums, cucumbers....i love this time of year :)

Dinner: Avocado Wraps

Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ berries

Lunch: Turkey wraps

sides: grapes

Snack: Homemade Cinnamon Ice Cream ( i love making this flavor..not one you usually find anywhere ..that I know of....but very very yummy and easy)

Dinner: Homemade Whole wheat pancakes with butter cream sauce

Sasha had avocado wraps..I bought a bunch of tortillas and we are living off of them this week.

Breakfast: Breakfast Burritos (scrambled eggs, salsa, monterey jack cheese)

sides: watermelon, V-8 fruit/veggie juice

Lunch: Spilt Pea Soup,

sides: cucumbers, garlic toast

Dinner: Freedom Fries

Breakfast: Raw oats w/ macademia nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds and berries (well at least that's what I put in mine...feeling like I needed a bit more protein this morning)

Lunch: Annie's Cheesy Ravoli

(it's a brand of canned ravoli's from good earth...I was away all morning scrapbooking with my friend and got home late) note...half of my children didn't really liked the canned taste..which is actually a good thing. I hardly ever feed them canned anything and they have good little taste buds that know the difference between canned and fresh.

Dinner:  Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

sides: green salad (Julia has been begging me for salad..I bought some vegan ceasar dressing and she and Joseph love it)

Sasha does not eat cheese so this wasn't appealing to him. I've decided that if he's had his typical lunch already which is nuts, berries, dates and soymilk and I make something for the other meal (be that dinner or lunch) that he doesn't eat..then I'll make him an avocado wrap. It's quick for me to do and I feel good about it. He's perfectly willing to make himself something else but I do like to help him out if I can.

I always like Ravoli's homemade the canned version just doesn't cut it. But it works for a quick meal.

Does your family ever eat whole wheat bagels, with honey and sprinkle in some raw oats?

From sarah on Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 08:51:24

We like bagels for a treat but they are expensive to buy all the time for a big family.

Breakfast: Oats w/ bananas and macademia nuts

Lunch: Free lunch at Macey's grocery store. They did this promotion that if you did some healthy activities and ate a healthy meal then you could come to the store for a free lunch.

They served: Barbeque chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and salad.

It humored me a little bit what their idea of healthy was...they even served soda and dessert at the meal...I guess I figured they could have just had fruit and juice.

It was so nice to sit down and be served....all for being healthy...fun!

Dinner: Different types of wraps (can you tell I'm on a food lag with the wraps......hey it's summer...who wants a hot kitchen...) I had a Barbeque Chicken Wrap and the boys had the ol standby Avocado Wrap.

Breakfast: oatmeal w/ berries and macademia nuts

 Lunch: Aduzui beans and barley

sides: baby carrots/green salad

Dinner: Freedom fries

sides: baby carrots...time to get to the store again

Dessert: Homemade rainbow cupcakes (made by Jenny almost entirely with her little cupcake kit that she bought with her own money)

Breakfast: oats and berries (fresh...went to Costco again yesterday...I love that store)

all except Jenny...the darling child begged me to give her jobs yesterday so she could earn money..since we'd had a busy weekend and didn't get our normal chores done I was of course more than willing. She vacuumed and dusted the entire upstairs and earned enough to buy herself a box of cereal at Good Earth which she will eat with great relish and delight in front of all the other children for the rest of the week.

Joseph didn't finish breakfast because a spider appeared at the table....We need to get out of the house today....

Lunch: Rotini Pasta w/ meat sauce

sides: Green salad/ baby carrots

Dinner: Cheesy Adzuki Bean Casserole (my kids will eat almost any leftovers if I make it into a cheesy mexican casserole...added some salsa, garlic and cheese and they loved it)

sides: grapes

Dessert: Cherry Cobbler

as soon as we finished our lessons yesterday my kids raced out the door and picked a huge amount of cherries. Then we spent the afternoon pitting them and checking for ...well...you know..extra unwanted protein. I think Julia and I were the biggest fans of the result. Joseph liked it too but Jacob..the kid who eats pretty much everything wouldn't touch it. I think maybe just maybe he actually doesn't like cherries.

Breakfast: The baby must be growing muscles or his brain is developing or something..I have not been able to stomach oats for the past few days and have been craving Breakfast Burritos..I finally got to the store and bought some eggs and had two and a half burritos with cheese and chicken sausage. Then I finished it off with some Cherry Cobbler and cream. I'm looking forward to feeling great this morning. I was so weak yesterday and could barely keep up with my kids at the library and had to strap them in the stroller and let them fuss....very not fun.

Lunch: Lentils and Rice

Green Salad

after my huge breakfast I wasn't hungry until about 3:00 in the afternoon. I still fed everyone but not until much later than normal

Dinner: Homemade cheese and chicken sausage pizza

green salad

The salad we will be eating this week is the basic spring mix they sell at Costco...it's great because it is prewashed. I always have a hard time feeling like I've washed the lettuce enough. The salad from Costco is alot of salad for only 4 dollars...it will give us enough for salads a couple of times a day and maybe smoothies for a week for my big family.  Sometimes we eat it straight. Sometimes with dressing or other veggies.

Breakfast: oatmeal and berries ( although I have to admit I was craving eggs again)

Lunch: Picnic in the park with G-ma and cousins visiting from California..ones my kids have never met before because of a divorce in that family.

Leftover Pizza

Strawberries

Dinner: French Toast w/ berries and pure maple syrup

When I made the pizza dough yesterday and made a little loaf of bread that I used for the french toast today.

Happy 4th tomorrow everyone..we've got some special meals planned and I'm sure you all are going to have a wonderful day.

Sarah, this is the first time I've noticed your recipe blog...love it! Thank you for sharing your family's diet. Your extra effort is much appreciated.

From sarah on Fri, Jul 04, 2008 at 15:21:58

i'm glad you like it. I try to just show an honest representation of what we actually eat...we are consistent about the way we eat and have found a healthy diet that works for us.

Breakfast: Fourth of July Pancakes (strawberries, blueberries, cottage cheese)

I am proud to say that my darling Benjamin made the pancakes all by himself...He even ground the flour fresh(the dear woke up at 6:30 so we could have our picnic breakfast while watching the balloons rise over the mountains)

Lunch: Baked Potato Bar...I've been looking forward to this....

toppings: cottage cheese, grated cheese blend, sour cream, corn, green peppers, tomatoes, onions, spring mix salad blend, broccoli, salt, pepper, ranch dressing, ceasar dressing, barbeque sauce (don't know if anyone will use this..we'll see)..umm...I think that's it....I can't wait..they are taking forever to cook

Dinner: Bagels and Cream Cheese

i didn't eat too much because i was still full from lunch. Somehow all of my children were hungry so we actually ate this meal way earlier than I was planning. I was thinking we'd have it as a late night snack type of thing when we'd finally digested our huge lunch....I guess I'll have it for a later snack when I've finally digested those huge potatoes I ate.   By the way..I did try the barbeque sauce with the potatoes. I think I actually put a little bit of every topping on mine. It was all delicious.

Breakfast: Breakfast Burritos (eggs, whole wheat tortillas, green peppers, corn...leftover toppings from the potato bar yesterday)

The kids however want oats but for some reason I still can't stand the sight of them....I don't want to eat eggs everyday but I just don't feel like oats or oatmeal.

Lunch: Leftover Baked Potato....still have plenty of potatoes and toppings so I think we'll do this lunch again.

Dinner: TBA

Breakfast: oats and homemade granola (I made some more and can now stand eating oats again....I actually love eating oats in the morning so I'm wondering why I had a sudden aversion to them)

Lunch: Fix your own...I had yet another baked potato and enjoyed it immensly ...the kids had all sorts of things that I can't even remember now..sorry

Dinner: Lasagna (whole wheat noodles, cottage cheese, grated cheddar cheese, italian flavored tomato sauce, garlic and green peppers)

sides: green salad

Breakfast: Granola w/ oats

Lunch: Haystacks (I found the millions of toppings on the baked potatoes a good way to feed my family of different preferences) I cooked some brown rice and had toppings like..salsa, corn, cheese, avocado, minced garlic, and chicken sausage available...everybody was happy....we may just have to eat that way everyday....I feel a food lag coming on. My definition of food lag is when I find a recipe that I love so much that I keep making it again and again)

Dinner: Rice and milk (well at least my three little ones had this...they love rice and milk and cinammon and agave...our sugar...for a yummy comforting dinner)

Breakfast: Oats and granola

i haven't made it up for breakfast yet but I've already had like 3 1/2 nectarines. I was a little hungry when I got home from my run. BTW...those of you that live in Utah Valley or thereabouts should check out Allred's fruit stand in a couple of weeks here. They sell the most amazing nectarines and peaches. Being the cheapskate I am I love to buy their boxes of seconds...or slightly weird looking fruit that they sell in a big brown box for only $5....it's about 20-25 pounds of fruit. I have a friend who buys it for canning. She came over one day and I fed her children some fresh peaches for a treat. She said, "Oh...I've never given them any fresh" and I said, "Well, my children will probably never eat them canned. " Not that I don't like canned peaches but 1. I'm not really into canning as much as she is and 2. We eat them fresh so fast that we don't have time to can them...I also love making cobblers and that uses up a lot of the fruit.

Lunch: Buckwheat and guacamole

Dinner: Fix your own...Jenny is having raisin bran, Joseph and Jacob wanted cheese sandwiches...the rest of us gave into the temptation of the wating cherry cobbler...the last for the year since our cherry tree has been picked to the bone (except for those really high branches that I'm too chicken to watch my kids climb up to...I invited a neighbor's child that I don't like very much and likes to climb)

LOL, did that neighbor kid go after the prize yet? That is too funny, sounds like something my wife would say.

From sarah on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 13:06:04

uh-oh..sounds like she might be feisty...hope you don't have your hands full with her...

Breakfast: granola, oats and yogurt

Lunch: Brown rice and chicken nuggets. I cut up some chicken breasts and roll them in olive oil. Then I stick them in a bowl of flour, garlic powder and salt (Today I'm doing 5 breasts and will use a couple of cups of flour to make sure they get nice and coated)..tsp of garlic, tsp of salt. Cook at 350 for 30 min then turn up to 400 for the last 15 to brown them. I usually spray the cookie sheet I use so they don't stick.

Dinner: We went swimming and then stopped by Great Harvest Bread to redeem our coupon for a free loaf of bread. While there we bought samples...the lady cut them real thick...for awhile I thought that could be dinner and I'd feed them some sort of snack when they begged for one later. They said they were hungry when we got home....so...I poppped some popcorn. We had two kinds: Caramel and Parmesan (for the caramel I boil 1/4 cup of agave and pour it on top of a big bowl...it really covers a big bowl and tastes yummy..see my recipe section)

Caramel Popcorn, Parmesan Popcorn

great harvest bread slices and juice

Breakfast: oats, granola and yogurt ( I added berries and macademia nuts to mine)

 Lunch: Tuna wraps

sides: tortilla chips, strawberries and leftovers from dinner...popcorn :)

Dinner: French Toast w/ berries

We were gone fishing today and would have had a salad on our wraps if I had been more organized...I wasn't...a day without veggies feels weird..should I feed my kids salad for a bedtime snack...or give them the leftover homemade ice cream in the fridge. Do you think they'd notice if it turned green suddenly?

I just have to say that we had a wonderful day driving out to Strawberry and sitting by the lake was the most delightful experience of the summer yet....gorgeous air...delightful lake breeze..the kids were happy wading and throwing rocks in the shallow water.

Breakfast: oats and granola w/ yogurt

Lunch: Parmesean Pasta

sides: green salad w/ fresh garden green beans and zucchini  the first of the year...delicious.

Dinner: Steamed Red Potatoes, Steamed Yams w/ buttter

fresh garden zucchini slices   I never realized how much I enjoy sliced zucchini when they are little and you can eat them like a cucumber. In the salad at lunch they had some dressing on them and were chopped up small. Tonight I ate them straight and enjoyed the mild taste.

Breakfast: Oat, granola and yogurt ..I bought three large containers of yogurt and by placing a dollop of it on mine and the kids breakfast it has lasted us all week.  Our little Jacob loves yogurt and asks, "more nummies" at every breakfast. I have made my own yogurt before but I find buying the natural brand that has a sugar I approve of to be just as cheap as making it.

Lunch: Cheesy Quesadillas

The kids ate theirs plain but I added spring salad mix and salsa to mine for a quick satisfying and healthy lunch

Dinner: Mashed Potatoes

Green Salad (with fresh garden green beans and garden zucchini)

Hey! Long time, no talk to. How are you? Busy with summer? Just curious where you shop? Is it at a health food store, or just smith's or something? These are good food ideas!

From sarah on Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 10:54:30

Good to hear from you too. I do most of my shopping at Costco..works for us because we have a family..might not work as well for a college student. I think Wal-mart has the best prices for overall shopping...especially since they price match. You can bring in an ad from a different store and get that price.

I buy salt free tomato sauce at there and our whole wheat tortillas for the best price I've found.

I get weird things like pickles and ketchup, herbs and other speciality items at the health food store that I can't find other places.

From Jennifer Pachev on Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 23:44:58

well I had a grilled cheese sandwich and

Jamba juice.

From sarah on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:18:50

that's right...Jenny went out for lunch that day...but I didn't write that down...she ran really fast and Daddy took her out. :)

Breakfast: Oats, granola and yogurt

No pancakes or waffles this morning. I often make them on Sundays because we don't have church until 11 and I actually have time to cook breakfast. However, Jenny fell out of the new bunk bed that we bought her yesterday and woke us up early. She is fine but we've installed an extra railing thing now so hopefully that won't happen again. We eventually went back to sleep and slept in later than normal.

Lunch: Fix your own. I had leftover mashed potatoes with salad and BBQ sauce on top.
The kids did their own thing and the little boys had sandwiches.

Dinner: Buckwheat and Sweet Mesquite Chicken Bits

sides: Garlic Biscuits (made entirely by Benjamin) and Green Salad (with more green beans and zucchini)

I often don't feel like making anything Sunday for dinner and whip up something really really easy. I like to follow the day of rest thing for religious and worship purposes and also for renewal. I cook for my family because I love them and I'm learning to enjoy it..but I'm human and definitely get burnt out with the kitchen scene day after day. I try to make it mentally manageable by not doing too much every single day and only making bigger or more complicated things when I'm in the mood and it will be a pleasure and not a chore.

Breakfast: Oats and granola (we are out of yogurt)

Lunch: Bean Burritos (emergency lunch today. I was playing my flute with the very talented Josse and after we were done I was so hungry I had to do something fast. So I got a can of refried beans from our 72 hour emergency kit ...we never eat canned foods except in "emergencies", heated them up and piled them up on some whole wheat tortillas)

sides: plums

Dinner: Potato Bar (I had so much fun with this last time that we did it again and invited our friends over who couldn't come last time because of sick children)

Toppings/sides: spring salad mix, corn, green peppers, broccoli, chicken sausage, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, salt, pepper, salsa, BBQ sauce)

Breakfast: oats and granola

Lunch: Turkey Burgers (Joseph's request)

I had green peppers, onions, pickles, organic ketchup, grapeseed oil mayo-which is way lighter tasting and very yummy, BBQ sauce and some kind of dark green leaf from the spring mix I buy at Costco) I also made homemade buns again. I was thankful they turned out soft and perfectly shaped this time...yay!

Dinner: Potato Supreme

I'm not sure exactly what to call it..I took 2 baked potatoes, 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup cheese, 1/4 cup milk, a couple of chicken sausages minced, and a few broccoli florets minced and created what I thought was a great dinner.  My kids spied it with caution but most of them enjoyed it..I do have some picky eaters that simply have bad attitudes..despite my intolerance of pickiness..they persist.

From luzylew on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:51:53

My philosophy is, if you starve them just right, they'll eat whatever you cook...I thought that potato thing sounded like heaven. Just keep exposing them to healthy foods on a regular basis and don't panic about the picky eating. Ignore it complety. My daughter always reminds me that children's taste buds are not same as adults so they taste things differently when they are young(she learned this in a kid's science magazine of course). But it must be true, why else do babies love lemons and pickles?

From sarah on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 13:23:50

yes...starving children do eat better don't they?

Breakfast: Oats and granola (I had raisin bran)

Lunch: Kasha (or Buckwheat...but we call it Kasha) Brought out a lot of the toppings we used on the potatoes...corn, sour cream, peppers, salad, etc....

Dinner: French Toast (on homemade bread...I always feel so cool when I do it this way) I added nutmeg to the mix and it had an extra yummy taste.
Scrambled Eggs

sides: fresh berries

My wife tried your banana bread recipe today and my kids can't leave it alone. As I am sitting on the phone with her she is sending them out of the kitchen. Thanks for the tasty and healthy recipe. I am yet to try it but if my kids like it you know it's good.

From sarah on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 21:35:51

I'm so glad...I love it too but actually don't make it much anymore now that bananas have gotten so expensive. There is a store in Salt Lake (NPS or Market Square) that sometimes has fabulous deals on bananas and then I make smoothies, bread, pancakes...everything with..you got it...bananas. :)

Breakfast: oats and granola ( I actually rebelled and had raisin bran again..I can only handle oats so many times a week. Don't get me wrong. I love them....I just need a change sometimes. My kids however like things to be the same and some of them don't like raisin bran...more for me)

Lunch: Cheesy Corn Quesidillas

sides: baby carrots and ...ta da...the first cucumber of the year....wait the second...I ate the first myself one night when we hadn't had any veggies that day and i was craving something.

Dinner: Fruteos cereal (looks like fruit loops...DOES NOT TASTE LIKE IT...but my kids don't know that so they loved it) I had some of the homemade bread I made this afternoon with PB and J since I just can't eat fake fruit loops that just taste blah...most of the healthy versions of stuff really tastes yummy or even better...not this....I bought two boxes of it on sale and I think we'll use the other box to make cereal necklaces....an experience every child should have a least once in awhile.

Sorry for commenting on such an old post---but that cracked me up!! Fruit Loops are my absolute weakness in life, more so than chocolate and homemade bread! They are definitely something you can not fake. I would make necklaces out of them, too!

From sarah on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 16:21:32

I enjoy talking to you..comment on anything you like. I guess I love Fruit Loops too because they fake version was not okay with me...luckily I don't crave them or I might be in trouble. I usually can get by on "fake" stuff and be happy.

From sarah on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 18:34:31

Oh...I'm so jealous about the produce co-op. I loved it when they had one in Provo..but the price of gas went up and this farm only does Salt Lake and nearby areas. I'm sure you are doing much better than you think about your family eating healthy. I don't have too much advice on how to convert kids from a standard American diet to one of whole foods (which is what you would call what we eat...some people are raw, some vegan...we do whole foods). My kids have eaten this way since they were little.

We buy treats at Good Earth and I homemake a lot of treats(I don't always post every single treat we have...I barely can get the meals on there it seems). When my kids complain I just make them eat it anyway. I don't know if that's the best way but it's what I've done. Maybe involving them in the menu planning might help or really teaching them about what refined foods do to your body. Kids respond to a little responsibility and knowledge...good luck..I'm sure you are doing great.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 18:44:37

What kind of treats do you buy at Good Earth? We try to make a run (in the car, not by foot) there once a month or so. Again, the price of gas affects how often we make it there!

We love the Lundbergs Brown Rice Cakes (Albertson's used to carry them, but stopped). Other than that, I just buy ground flaxseed and the occasional cracker (we tried one this week that was made with almonds--it was GOOD!) I always hesitate to try something new unless someone has recommended it to me!

Okay, I guess I should get off the computer and go make dinner. AGAIN, thanks so much for your help! Running and nutrition are the it things at our house right now. My eating is okay, but my kids just fight me every step of the way and it is hard to make them one thing and then make something else for my healthy husband and teen-ager! On a bright note, I got every single on of them to try pineapple last night and they all liked it (we grilled it on the BBQ---nothing like a little natural sugar!)

Okay---really off to cook now!

Breakfast: Oatmeal (ordered by Joseph...he likes to boss me around...he is often polite about it but he does have opinions)

Lunch: Lentils and Rice

sides: green salad with zucchini and fresh garden cucumbers..yum. The dressing I make for it is so easy and my kids LOVE salad with this dressing. I simply put on about a 1T of veganaise (it's grapeseed oil mayo that is very light and very good for you) and then about 1/4 t of garlic powder. It gives it a ranch dressing type taste for pennies and my kids adore it.  They also LOVED the cucumbers. I picked two for the salad and ended up with half of one. They were begging me to cut up more....and I love that.

Dinner: Blini..okay...here is a Russian recipe that I healthified. Blini is the Russian word for crepes. There is a cult in Russia that judges a woman by her blini..the thinner the better..she has to be able to flip them just right...and of course they have to be perfectly round.

I make this recipe in my family sized rectangle electric skillet. The first time I made them Sasha (who usually is pretty oblivious to what food looks like) laughed and said, "A schto za blini?" Meaning loosely...what in the world did you do to those blini?  Ah...well at least my kids can enjoy the joy of blini without mommy standing over a stove for 2 hours...this version cooks up in about 20 minutes..Yay!

I'll post the recipe later..gotta go read stories to my kids.

Breakfast: Oatmeal and berries

Lunch: Lentil Casserole (yummy..I finished off the lentils and rice in a delicious casserole....I put in corn tortillas, tomato sauce seasoned with cumin and garlic powder, corn, cheese and of course the leftover lentils and rice) I layered it like lasagna and put it in the oven for 40 minutes...oh..I forgot I also added some sour cream..finished off the container that I'd bought for the baked potato bar.

sides: baby carrots

Dinner: Homemade chicken sausage and cheese pizza (every time I go to Costco I have to buy the chicken sausage and every time I buy it I have to make pizza....so here we go again)

sides: Big fat green salad...I'm starting to crave these which is good for me because I'm not really a salad eater....with garden cucumbers...yum.

Dessert: Cinnamon Rolls (homemade...made the dough along with the pizza dough..I used to dread baking things like cinnamon rolls or any yeast based bread because I never felt like it came out quite right...I love my Bosch...I've been baking happily ever since I got it)

Breakfast: Oats and granola w/ berries

Lunch: Salmon and steamed red potatoes

sides: cucumbers and baby carrots

Dinner: Garden Vegetable Chicken Soup

So only one of the veggies in the soup was from our actual garden but it still sounded like a good name for this soup. I used a box of free range chicken broth, 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts cut up, 10 baby carrots chopped, 2 medium potatoes chopped, 1 clove of garlic minced, 4 green beans chopped, and about 1/2 cup of frozen corn. I brought it to boiling and simmered it for 30 minutes. My kids adored it especially since we hadn't had soup for awhile.

Dessert: Carob Party Cake w/ whipping cream frosting...it was Jacob's 2nd birthday today...he liked the cake and present part but got really annoyed at us earlier in the day when we kept singing happy birthday to him all the time.

Breakfast: oatmeal

Lunch: Red lentils and rice ( I cooked them together and added a bunch of different types of herbs..sage, parsley, coriander and garlic powder. You can basically put in any herbs you want...red lentils cook up very creamy...I love lentils)

sides: baby carrots ..I'm kind of being stubborn in the veggie dept. I didn't buy many this week because we should have some from our garden in a couple of days...

Dinner: Lentil Mexican Casserole (this is kind of similar to one I made last week..layers of corn tortillas that I broke up by hand, tomato sauce seasoned with cumin and garlic, cheese, frozen corn and of course the lentils and rice from lunch...my kids LOVED it)

The lentils and rice is a great filler food for casseroles, wraps, I know some people make salad type meals with them. I've made lentil burgers many times but Sasha stopped liking them and the kids are happy eating them in the non-burger form...which is much easier.

It is also a DIRT CHEAP meal..I haven't done the math exactly but when you buy in bulk (even with the rising prices it is still cheaper to buy in bulk if you are disciplined enough to eat your bulk food). For LDS people out there this is such a great food storage food. I like beans but I am so bad about remembering to soak them and then never seem to have time to cook them the next day if I don't soak them. I go through phases of being good about beans and bad. Lentils are so easy..no soaking...they cook in roughly 30-40 minutes.  And they can be enjoyed with almost any spice or herb you like...very versatile.

Where did the daily menu go? I do read it every day even if I don't comment on it.

From sarah on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 11:29:40

Oh my...thanks for the reminder...I didn't notice I'd fallen behind. It was a big holiday in Utah yesterday..pioneer day and Sasha needed babying after the marathon..so I got a little airheaded. I'm so glad you like the blog. I will probably keep doing it for a month or so and then pick it back up again a few months after the baby is born.

From Lybi on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 11:34:07

I didn't even know there were different colored lentils! Sarah, you are an amazing cook. I should try the lentils because we've been cutting down our meat intake and we need the protein. And beans are just such a pain to cook!

From sarah on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 11:40:59

Yes..yes yes...beans are a pain and in a perfect world they would be more like lentils..Lentils are the lazy man's beans. I LOVE them. I would still however like to be better at beans. I'll bet I could get Sasha to write me a program that reminded me to soak the beans. He's funny about that...he seriously offers to write a cron demon program to automate things for us. I can just hear the computer now every Tuesday night at 9:00 in Sasha's voice saying..."Sarah..don't forget to soak the beans."

From Lybi on Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 11:55:18

Hahaha! A pressure cooker may help. I did pretty decent beans on Tues. in just 2 hours with my pressure cooker. So I started at 3 pm! Boil, wait an hour, pressure cook for 40 min. and then just let cool off. Beans and rice is a favorite dinner over here these days--and it is all from your recipe.

Breakfast: Oats and granola

Lunch: Historical first picnic on my masterpiece picnic blanket...I'm so sorry I haven't figures out how to post pictures because it is a lovely quilt I designed myself.

We had: Cheesy Quesidillas (on corn tortillas..I like these because you can get a bunch for cheaper than wheat tortillas)

sides: juice boxes ...this is very exciting for my kids because they are expensive...and baby carrots.

Dinner: Garden Veggie Chicken Lentil Soup

I used the rest of the lentils and rice (which is also great for soups) and added carrots, green beans (from our garden), zucchini(from our garden), chicken broth, and chicken.

I have to admit that I burnt it a teeny bit but it was luckily still edible but not as wonderfully delicious as it would have been.

Dessert: Watermelon and then later soy ice cream bought by Daddy to celebrate Pioneer Day and the marathon he ran in the morning.

Breakfast: oats and granola

Lunch: yet another picnic on the blanket....I couldn't resist...and it was science today for our little homeschool so we went on a nature adventure...We had turkey cheese and spring salad mix wraps on whole wheat tortillas w/ watermelon, honeydew melon and baby carrots.

Dinner: The rest of the Fruteos...we made the necklaces and there was some leftover for a night like tonight when I got back  at 6:00 p.m. from a fun and long day of visiting friends and shopping for weird things like a video camera battery that I finally found at a specialty store and young coconuts from the Thai store on the other side of town.

Breakfast: Oats ..I had mine with bananas and macademia nuts. I'm actually still hungry so I'd better go eat more..the baby must be having a growth spurt. The other day I had to keep filling my bowl up like 6 times before I felt I'd gotten enough. I try to be sensitive to this and eat until I'm full and stop before I'm overfull. Unfortunately my stomach has times where it's tiny and I eat a little bowl of something and I'm stuffed. its a weird pregnancy thing I guess.

Lunch: Turkey wraps  w/ cheese and spring salad mix

sides: nectarines

Dinner: Refried Beans and Rice....I finally made beans...I think credit goes to Lybi for encouraging me with her stories of eating beans...Thanks Lybi !

Breakfast: Oats

Lunch: Cheese sandwiches

Dinner: Revisted Refried Beans and Rice...I love leftovers personally but I don't think my family always does...beans and rice fare well the next day I think.....tomorrow the rest will be made into some kind of yummy soup.

Breakfast: oats

Lunch : Buckwheat (my little ones LOVE kasha..what we call it...Jacob had 6 servings and Joseph had 4)

sides: Green salad

Dinner:  Homemade whole wheat pancakes w/ pure maple syrup and berries

Breakfast: oats (but some people had leftover pancakes)

Lunch: Oh..I broke down and we actually had PB and J today. I'm not sure why I avoid this but I guess I feel like it's just not a meal that gives me what I need. I'm more of a bean/meat protein person. Anyway, we had the sandwiches in the car on the way to a million errands today. Not even a few minutes to spread out the picnic blanket.

Dinner: Bean Soup

This soup turned out great. I simply added chicken broth, a couple of cut up chicken breasts, garden zucchini and salt. My kids loved it and it filled our tummies.

sides: garden cucumbers....we are getting lots this year..yay..last year we only had a few and it was a bummer because I was all psyched to can pickles. No can can this year...I just won't do that pregnant. It's too much of a strain.

Dessert: Coconut Pudding

I think I forgot to mention the fabulous raw frozen coconut pie I made the other day. My friend gave me the recipe and I LOVE making it.  I used the three leftover young coconuts from the pie. I always buy a few extra because we love coconut and I might as well buy a lot once I'm at the Thai store that sells them for cheap.

For the pudding I hacked open the coconuts with my huge knife I bought at the Thai store. (that's the part I like the best....) Then I pour out the coconut juice (which is soooo good for you). I scrape out the coconut meat and put it in our k-tec blender with a squirt of lemon juice, a handful of blueberries and a couple of T of agave and coconut oil.

Blend it up and serve it immediately or chilled as coconut pudding...soooo good.

Breakfast: oats and blackberries

Lunch: adzuki beans and barley

sides: garden cucumbers

Okay..I have to say I'm a so proud of myself when I make what I call a "food storage/garden" meal. When something I serve my family is nearly 100% from food storage and the garden I feel like a proud Latter Day Saint girl.

Dinner: I'm thinking of making calzones for dinner tonight...with cheese and chicken sausage filling. Same idea as pizza just a little twist that my kids will probably think is cool. We'll see how I'm feeling...maybe need to rest this afternoon because I've been a busy bee this week and ran a little faster this morning and yesterday...gotta watch my pregnant legs now that I'm in the third trimester.

Dessert: Zucchini Muffins

I will definitely make this no matter how I feel. I've got two beautiful Zucchini from my garden waiting to for me to make them into something delicious.

Note: I made the calzones and the muffins all in one tornado and then spent a hour on the couch recovering...Sasha saved me from the couch and took me house shopping...we aren't moving but we like to look for fun. I told the kids that mommy and daddy were having a date and we just happened to be taking them with us...they weren't too thrilled to be thrown in the car just to drive by some houses.

The Calzones were SOOOOO delicious and even though they were a little bit of work I want to make them again...like tomorrow...

From JeffC on Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 11:18:15

I love calzones. If you really want to step off the deep end, try frying them instead of baking them. We made these on my mission in Italy and they are called panzerotti. Really bad for you but very tasty. I usually just put my choice of fillings (cheese, onions, cooked meet, etc), seal well, then fry, then top with your favorite pizza/spaghetti sauce and enjoy. Then run 10 miles the next day to run it off.

Breakfast: Zucchini muffins (some of us still ate oats)

Lunch: zucchini muffins ...I didn't mean to eat them again but my friend asked us to meet her at the park and I didn't have enough time to get a "normal lunch" together. Her kids and my kids devoured the muffins and everyone seemed very happy.

sides: fresh picked apricots...my friend has a tree with about 4,000 apricots in it and we made a very small dent in it this morning and picked a few hundred.

Dinner: Adzuki Bean and barley casserole (yesterdays beans and barley with some cumin, tomato sauce, corn tortillas and cheese) My kids will eat anything if there is some cheese on top.

sides: kiwi and peaches

Breakfast: oats (I'm really liking macademia nuts, banana and blueberries on mine lately)

Lunch: Salmon and steamed potatoes (I always add parsley, garlic powder, dill and salt to both..olive oil to the potatoes)

sides: garden cucumbers and our first garden tomato

Dinner: Cold cereal...can't remember the name...some fake cheerios w/ dehydrated strawberries. Not bad but not my favorite..I really like raisin bran and this kind called puffins.

Dessert: My favorite cookies at Good Earth were on sale and I brought some home. I can eat an entire box by myself..they are soooo good.

Breakfast: Oats

Lunch: Buckwheat

sides: garden cucumbers

Dinner: Garden Veggie Lasagna Supreme

I'm pre-blogging this today so I'll just tell my idea for the recipe and then maybe I'll actually look one up on-line to help me not mess this up. My idea is to saute some zucchini, squash and green beans together with garlic and some other spices I haven't decided ye. I'll have that be the bulk of my lasagna. I'll add grated cheese and some chicken sausage in the layers and call it almost vegetarian but very good for using up garden veggies. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Okay..I looked up some recipes and am trying the crazy and cool idea I found online. You actually use the giant zucchini from your garden sliced up as the lasagna noodles....I did that and then made a tomato, squash, green bean, and italian spice sauce in the blender which I poured over the "noodles" I added the sausage and cheese to the layers. It's still cooking...I may steam the "noodles" first because it's going on 2 hours in the oven to achieve the tenderness I was looking for and that's a bit long for me.

Okay final comment on this venture. It tasted great..I got impatient and took it out before it reached it's full tenderness so it would have been a little bit easier to chew if I'd cooked it until really really tender..all in all it was a success.

Breakfast: Oatmeal

Lunch; Refried Beans and Brown rice

sides: avocados, green onions, cheese, tomatoes, salsa...

homemade rootbeer to drink with homemade rootbeer popsicles for dessert

Dinner: Enchilada Casserole

sides: garden cucumbers...I am so happy I planted 12 plants this year and get a cucumber for dinner or lunch almost everyday.

FHE treat: Gramwiches...more of those cookies I could eat all by myself. I bought 4 boxes thinking they'd last a few weeks....

Last night I dreamed I was eating a Gramwich and I woke up eating one.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 16:39:00

Here is a nosy question that you can choose to answer or not. Since we both have the same size family (at least for a few months anyway), how much do you spend a month on groceries??

You guys are definitely healthy eaters, and I sometimes feel like it is too expensive to eat healthy (they have such great sales on JUNK). I am a big couponer, sale watcher, price matcher, you name it! I have to be able to afford to feed this big family on just a cops salary, ya know??? I try hard to feed my kids healthy, but I feel like I spend so much more money (not to mention fighting them on eating the right way!)

I would love any help or input you could give me here. This little blog is inspirational to me, now I just need the recipes!!

From sarah on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 17:57:30

I spend between 80-150 dollars a week on groceries..ideally...sometimes it goes up to $200 in a week when we are constantly going to the store for this or that or we feel the need to get something special like for holidays, guests or birthdays.

I don't do coupons because they are mostly for processed foods but I do try to eat our food storage, buy in bulk, plant a garden, pick my neighbors overgrown whatever they have fruit trees in season and look out for deals.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 18:17:13

Okay, that makes me feel a little better. I do need to plant a garden, but we have no yard! We live in a new neighborhood, so I am starting to watch how all of my neighbors are incorporating gardens into our tiny lots! I belong to a produce group (where we get produce from the suppliers at a big discount) and I hit Farmers Markets when I get a chance.

And, you are right about the coupons!! They are for junk! Since we started eating healthier I rarely use coupons anymore, but I do find some that are useful!

Thanks for your tips---I will keep watching your recipe blog for ideas on how I can get my kids to eat better. If your kids will eat it, mine should be able to learn to, right??

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 19:19:54

The kids will eat anything if the alternative is to go hungry.

From sarah on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 20:53:47

We don't allow our kids to eat any type of refined treat they get offered the millions of places they offer kids stuff like that....and we've been doing that since the oldest was 3..so they are used to it. Sooooo...we spoil them with every kind of treat you can imagine from good earth with the exception of chocolate which we have decided to not eat at all..although I'm starting to think it would be okay to buy cocoa and make our own. Anyway, we've pretty much tried everything sweet they sell there. We don't really buy a lot of food food there...I can find similar products cheaper or make my own.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 07, 2008 at 21:39:08

My kids will go hungry...but only for a meal!

By the way, what is a Gramwich?? Sounds GOOD.

Breakfast: oats

Lunch: Turkey wraps

sides: carrots

Dinner: Bean and Rice soup (I'll add some veggies from the garden and chicken sausage)

sides: watermelon

Do you get your chicken suasage at Costco?

Breakfast: oats  but I had raisin bran and Jenny bought herself some special cereal at Good Earth and then ate it in front of everyone...it was a lovely start to the day.

Lunch: Tuna Casserole

Dinner: We've eaten beans all week but I'm still going to try and see if I can get my kids to finish them off...I liked the bean soup I made last night....maybe if I have a good dessert  to bribe them with they will all eat beans for the fourth time this week without complaining..

Breakfast: Oats (I had macademia nuts, bananas and blueberries..I've been liking the combination lately)

I was able to get my 6 year old to eat chicken tonight (it only took 30 minutes)! He actually had food for a change! Baby steps...

What was that breakfast combination?? Just like a little homemade trailmix type "snack" for breakfast?? It sounds good---I love macadamia nuts and blueberries! Target has a great trail mix with both in it.

From sarah on Fri, Aug 08, 2008 at 23:39:38

We eat raw rolled oats almost every morning for breakfast.(straight from our food storage...very very cheap breakfast). We always add milk and agave(a low glycemic sweetner from catcus juice). Sometimes we add things on top of the oats for variety...anything from cinnamon to sunflower seeds. Whatever we are in the mood for. So yes, it does kind of sound like a trail mix but to us it is..well..a yummy yummy breakfast. (my friend adds peanut butter to hers) and Sasha eats his oats with berries, dates and peanuts.

Good luck with that 6 year old. I feel for you...I do have picky eaters and I really feel for you.

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 16:25:16

I did not get that you had that on top of you oats---that was why I was confused!!! Sounds nummy!

Breakfast: oats

Lunch: Buckwheat

sides: garden tomatoes...they are finally ripe!!!

Dinner: Calzones..these were so good last time we had to make them again...I had my older kids do most of the work for them and they were very proud of the delicious meal they made.

sides: Green Salad (also made by my little Jenny) w/ fresh garden tomatoes

Breakfast: Pancakes and fruit at the Provo River Half Marathon. Sasha helps Curt the race director with his website and Curt always invites our whole family to come enjoy the fun.

Lunch: Scrambled Eggs ( Sasha took the big kids out for a lunch treat and me and the little ones had this)

Dinner: TBA

Breakfast: Oats and milk

Lunch: Adzuki beans and barley

garden cucumber

Dinner:  Mexican lasagna (adzuki beans, barley, tomato sauce, corn tortillas, cheese on top, mexican spices in sauce)

bought the kids animal crackers and 100% fruit fruit snacks at good earth

Breakfast: Oats and milk

Lunch; Pita Pockets

(homemade pita pockets stuffed with adzuki beans and barley, garden tomatoes, salsa and cheese)

Dinner: Raisin Bran...needed something easy..making pita pockets is more involved than I usually do..although it was pretty simple it just adds more time and more clean-up.

I have some kind of exciting news. I was contacted by the director of diabetic research at New Mexico University today. They are putting together a cookbook for diabetics as part of their extension services and wanted to use some of my recipes. It kind of gave me a kick.

Very exciting news indeed! Let us know when the book's out!

Your meals are sometimes so simple to make and sound so yummy, Sarah! Thanks for the ideas!

From sarah on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 10:50:51

Thanks Lucia. I try to do everything really simple. It's usually cheaper and I want to get it done fast so I have more time with my little ones. They don't like it when Mama is busy in the kitchen and they need help with all the million things children need.

Breakfast: oats and milk

Lunch: Picnic in Salt Lake with my sister and her 5 kids. We had bean burritos, baby carrots, baked cheetos and apples. It was a free lunch program for kids they do during the summer. (to make sure kids are fed by their parents during the summer I guess?? )

Dinner: Apricot Muffins and Pina Colada Banana Smoothies.

I got a million apricots from a friend..made it into a bunch of syrup..that I planned on using on top of waffles. My kids don't really like the syrup so I used it to sweeten and liquify the muffin batter I made this morning. Worked like a charm.

Then I went to my favorite store this morning and they had my dream come true...a box of bananas(like 25 pounds or so) for $6.00..yay!!! I also bought some juice for cheap and we are going to have smoothies and banana bread galore this week.

Breakfast: oats and banana smoothies (we will be having lots of banana things this week to eat up our bananas) I will also freeze some of them. Then I put them frozen in our K-tec awesome blender and it creams them into an amazing banana ice cream. I add a tiny bit of soy milk to it and that's it. It's really sweet and creamy.

Lunch: Tuna Sandwiches

We now have an overload of bread. I went to my favorite store in Salt Lake yesterday that sells the bread we buy at Costco for 3.00 for only 1.00. I've stocked up and am very happy. We really don't eat sandwiches very much because it's a pain to bake that much bread and it's expensive to buy the kind we eat. Also I still feel like I get more full and feel better after a cooked meal with whole grains, beans or meat. But if I have the bread and it needs to be eaten I'm happy to have a easy meal of sandwiches. Maybe we'll have French Toast for dinner tonight...we'll see...I'm still deciding.

Dinner: Pasta and baby carrots...soccer season is here and I need to get organized. It should be better this year because his practices are at 7 at night instead of the insane hour of 5...dinner time..or dinner making time at least. 7 will be great and then there's the games to figure in but Daddy helps out a lot by taking Benjamin to a lot of the games so that helps.

Those smoothies sound really good, could you email me one :)

From sarah on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 14:44:23

You're funny Jeff!

Breakfast: Peach Cobbler....I LOVE August and I love Allred's fruit stand in Provo that sells me a huge box of peaches for $6.00. Someone amongst the craziness of going to a water park in the afternoon and soccer in the evening I managed to whip up some peach cobbler. We loved it for breakfast this morning and I'm sure it will be gone by noon tomorrow.

Lunch: Yummy Supreme Harvest Blend (this would be lentils and rice topped with a fabulous garden sauce- I sauted garlic and onion in some olive oil and added tomato sauce, chopped zuhcinni, squash, and green beans. It was delicious)

sides: Yummy Supreme Havest Salad- chopped squash, zuhcinni, cucumbers, and tomatoes with a light olive oil/garlic dressing...superb.

Dinner:  Banana Pancakes and banana/peach  smoothies.

Breakfast: Oats and Milk..the peach cobbler lasted until noon yesterday...I'll be going to get more peaches today. I was a good girl this time and actually got some in the freezer.

Lunch:   PB and J sandwiches

Dinner: Lentil and Rice Soup

sides: garlic bread and garden cucumbers

Breakfast: Peach Cobbler

Lunch: Zucchini Pasta

sides: garden tomatoes

Dinner: Fix your own....these types of meals are fun and crazy. I had leftover pasta and everyone else had crazy combinations of whatever they were in the mood for.

Breakfast: Oatmeal

Lunch: Barbeque Chicken and Basmati Brown Rice

sides: garden tomatoes and cukes

I cooked the chicken and rice together with a lot of water and about 1/2 of cup of barbeque sauce. It resulted in a very mild tasting chicken and delicious moist chicken barbeque rice. Sasha had thirds so I'll probably make this again.

Dinner: Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

sides: cukes

Thanks for this and for your recipes. I have tried 3 or 4 with my kids the last few weeks and all have gone over well! I still have yet to buy agave and try it, but I will!

We still have so far to go (like the McDonalds kids meals I gave in to today---yuck!!!) but we are working on it and they have been pretty good to try new things!

Breakfast: oats and milk (I had wheat puff cereal..um...drawing a blank on the real name...sorry) Then around 10 I had eggs...The baby must be growing because I'm starving and exhausted today.

Hi Mama Sarah--eggs? Perfect choice. I love eggs. No doubt baby's growing in high gear now. Got any good suggestions for mung beans? I've been off the meat lately and heard mung beans with brown rice make a perfect protein. I didn't see anything on the recipe blog. P.S. Sasha invited me to come run with you this morning (Thursday) as we passed on the trail (he obviously wasn't paying close attention to my lack of speed and form which would indicate my current state of mind). But what do you say about tommorrow (Friday)?

From sarah on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 19:21:44

I'd love too. Anytime works for me now that it's cooled off a bit. Let me know and I'll be ready. Mung beans...I have to confess I haven't branched out to those...are they the green ones. However I think if you do a search on the good ol internet you'll find a recipe. Let me know. If you don't feel like searching I would just cook them up and add whatever spices are your favorite..or the good ol ever easy braggs works good. Then I'd chop up your favorite veggies or add some lettuce and sour cream (you've gotta have sour cream if you are off meat right?) If you do find a cool recipe let me know.

Breakfast: Oats and Milk

Lunch: Buckwheat

sides: garden tomatoes

Dinner: Squash/tomatoe fritatta ( my kids didn't like the squash part but ate the eggs underneath..it was an experiment I won't repeat)

Breakfast: Bagels and cream cheese, bananas, OJ

Lunch: Zucchini Sauce over Basmati Rice

sides: garden tomatoes

Dinner: Oats and milk...I had leftovers but the kids love oats and it was time to get going to watch the men's marathon.

Breakfast: oats and milk

Lunch: Cheese Sandwiches

Dinner: Macaroni w/ red sauce and cheese

sides: cukes

I made the coolest thing yesterday that I'm so proud of. We'll see how proud I am when we try eating it. I got the idea from my mother-in-law who is an excellent cook. She knows how to make anything taste wonderful and always prepares us delicious meals when she is here. She took some of the zucchini from our garden and...pickled it!! I'd never in my life thought about it but it is actually a great thing to do with lots of zucchini and it is the only way Sasha will eat the stuff. I did a conservative 5 jars because I'm just trying it out and I didn't can it so it's just sitting in my fridge. I liked the taste of the brine I made so I think it will turn out well.

Breakfast: Oats and Milk

Lunch: Barbeque chicken and basmati rice

sides: garden tomatoes

Dinner: Annie's All Natural Organic Bunny Mac and Cheese ...or something like that...Jenny found a pink box of bunny shaped pasta at Good Earth yesterday and she had to have it..it was her 8th birthday...she was so excited about it...I did make a fuss over her but in some ways I wish I'd made a bigger fuss...she was so cute all day long, "I can't believe it's my birthday." or"Oh...I just remembered...it's my birthday."  Her two favorite things in the world are the color pink and her trusty stuffed bunny...the meal was perfect. :)

That tomato and cuke salad sounds really good. Do you throw in some vinegar and pepper and other things or just leave it as is, fresh and natural?

From sarah on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:43:07

Depends on my mood...sometimes I just salt it. Sometimes I try a little vinegar but my kids don't like that as much. Braggs Aminos goes well with it or just simple olive oil and salt is my favorite..let it sit for 10 minutes before serving and it's so yummmy.

Breakfast: oats and milk

sides: nectarines and zucchini bread

Lunch: Adzuki Bean Mexican Enchailada Casserole

sides: tomato cuke salad and fresh farm corn on the cob

Dinner: Leftovers or make your own...I had leftovers everyone else had whatever they wanted.

sides: pineapple

I LOVE zucchini bread! I can not make it to save my life, but I love it! My VT brought me some yesterday and we devoured it! I am PMing you a recipe we tried and loved. You guys might like it.

Breakfast: I had raisin bran..the kids had oats and milk

Lunch: Pita Pockets with adzuki bean hummus, fresh garden veggies and salsa

Dinner: TBA

Breakfast: oatmeal..can you feel fall in the air..oatmeal is always so comforting but I usually opt for oats because it's easier to not cook them

Lunch: Lentils and Rice seasoned with Braggs and topped with salsa

sides: nectarines, cuke and tomato salad

Dinner: I'm contemplating making a fun dish that I've never made before to use up some squash from the garden . It will have potatoes, squash, cheese and turkey bacon as the main elements...we'll see how it turns out and if my kids will eat it.

I did make it and I sauted some onions before I baked it all up. It was DELICIOUS!! I'm making it again tomorrow!!

Breakfast: Carob Apricot Raspberry Waffles (homemade carob and apricot sauce on top of whole wheat waffles with raspberries on top...this is a fabulous combo!!)

Lunch: Potato Squash Turkey Bacon Casserole( I think I'm going to add this one and the one on top to my collection of Sarah recipes...I'm having a good cooking day). I sliced about 7 small red potatoes potatoes potato chip style, diced the medium sized squash (which I grew), diced about 4 slices of turkey bacon, sauted about half an onion , added about 3/4 cup of cheese (some throughout, some on top) and baked it for 45 minutes in the oven at 350 or until it's bubbly and the potatoes and squash are tender. yum yum

Dinner: hopefully something easy..I'm bushed

We ended up just having oats and milk or whatever else you wanted to fix yourself....I can only cook so much in one day. ;)

Time to cut down on something...and that is this recipe blog for awhile. I am now 33 1/2 weeks pregnant and I'm cutting some things out. Thanks to all of you who have diligently checked out what we crazies eat everyday. I'd like to collect healthy recipes from all the bloggers and maybe make a blog cook book that will inspire all of us to eat more whole foods....maybe that will happen before the baby...maybe not.

Just a couple of fun ideas for today. If you have a poweful blender(we have a K-Tec). ...I've been making this delicious banana ice cream out of frozen bananas and soymilk. I put much less soymilk than I would for a smoothie and it comes out thick and frozen and sweet.....just like ice cream should be.

Jenny, our 8 year old, made some really good trail mix today. The addition that I thought was super yummy was a little bit of puffed wheat. She also got the proportions beautifully. She made one serving for herself and put about a Tablespoon of the following ingredients in (for a crowd I'd put in 1/2 to 1 cup of each)

pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flame raisins, puffed wheat, carob chips,  and peanuts..oh and she said she sprinkled a little peanut butter on top. It was good. I think we'll be making it for our camping trip this weekend.  Best of luck to all you healthy eaters out there.

Thanks for all the great info over the past several months. I look forward to following future postings.

Thanks...I already miss doing it but I think it's time to take a break..especially in the next couple of weeks since I probably won't be cooking as much. Good luck!!

How many calories does the banana ice cream contain for 16oz? Very nice job Sarah.

From sarah on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 17:36:02

You're kidding about the calories, right? I don't know how many calories are in a banana but since it's mostly bananas knowing that would help you figure it out. I don't eat the way we do for weight loss...I watch my overall food intake and try to eat until I'm full. I gain weight if I overeat. I feel terrible if I don't eat enough.

From wheakory on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 17:53:46

It was a joke, because you said Ice Cream and I'm thinking Ice Cream made other ways how high in Calories it is. You can't have real ice cream and call it ice cream without high calories and goodies on top. :-)

From sarah on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 19:03:15

I think I could change your mind about that...

From wheakory on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 22:46:22

I'll have to try your recipe. I do like smoothie's. I go to Jamba Juice and get smoothie's all the time. I only get the healthy ones.

"I'd like to collect healthy recipes from all the bloggers and..."

Mayan Burritos:

-Overtly orange sweet potatoes, smashed.

-Beautifully black beans.

-Garishly green guacamole.

-Really red tomatoes, diced (and if they're in season, yellow and purple heirloom tomatoes).

-Salsa (the hotter the better but suite yourself).

-Cilantro.

-Whole wheat tortillas.

-Optional- cheese and/or sour cream (non-fat plain yogurt is a good substitute).

Bake the sweet potatoes @ 350F until tender (about 45-60 mins), remove the skins, and smash them (the potatoes not the skins).

Simmer the black beans in a sauce pan with diced onions and minced garlic. Canned or dried black beans both work.

Warm the tortillas one at a time in a skillet or wrap a bunch of them in foil and warm them in a 300F oven.

Artfully arrange spoonfuls of color on a tortilla and try to wrap it into a burrito.

Thank you Mark. My kids love sweet potatoes...I'll have to try that. I like you recipe writing style..it's snazzy. :)

HEY! I'm not really officially back since I just had our little Willy Billy Baby Boy 12 days ago but I may post things here for fun now and then. I am feeling pretty good so I'm trying to contribute to the household here and there and I made fresh applesauce for a snack. I love having a powerful blender. I just cut up 5 or 6 apples and put in about a cup of water and presto..you've got applesauce. I also like making warm applesauce on the stove but you really need to peel the apples for that and don't have to with our K-Tec blender. I felt accomplished but didn't feel like I'd overdone either...have a good one.
